Choral Conducting

UGA Choral Conducting Studio - Spring 2022

The Graduate Choral Conducting studio at the University of Georgia is a selective program offering MM and DMA degrees. Ranging in size between 4-6 students at a time, split between MM and DMA students, the program emphasizes ongoing, critiqued podium time with university choral ensembles, and a thorough exploration of conducting gesture, rehearsal techniques, vocal pedagogy and ensemble voice building, score study, and choral literature.  Students also are encouraged to continue voice study and enroll in lyric diction classes based on language proficiency and need.  MM and DMA students also study instrumental conducting and are encouraged to program choral/instrumental works during their residencies, with program-provided funding to support the hiring of instrumentalists.   Due to the selectivity and relatively small size of the program, students benefit from an "on-the-job" mentorship environment with choral faculty, paired with a supportive cohort of conducting classmates. Generous assistantship funding is available for competitive applicants.  Conducting applicants with strong theory skills and teaching experience are also encouraged to apply for assistantship consideration in Aural Skills, as these disciplines often complement one another.

Applications are typically due December 1 for matriculation the following Fall. See links below for information about the current application cycle.
